Hi women,

I'm new to GoTribal.  I live in Michigan and will be out visiting my brother for 3 weeks in Palm Springs (Dec. 16-Jan. 6).  I'm pretty sure we'll both go crazy spending that much time together in his small apartment. I'm flying my bike out so I can keep training (I'm doing the World Spring Tri in New Zealand in Oct. 2012).  Anyone need a house/dog/cat sitter for any amount of time during that timeframe?

I don't smoke, just turned 53 (and for this brief month my age and my triathlon markings will be identical).  Thanks for considering.

Griff (AKA Carol)

Maybe we could do something as a tribe. Is there interest in that?

Marie Hughes's picture

Hey, things have been pretty quiet lately. What's everyone up to?

kim serra's picture

Hi Marie!

I signed up for my first "real" sprint triathlon, it's at the end of Sept.  It's the See Jane Run event in Pleasanton.  I'm desperate for a training plan that will get me from now until then, but everything online costs money.  Do you know of a free training plan out there?  If I can't find one, I'm basically just going to make something up (bike one day, run one day, swim one day, then on a sat/sun do 2 of the above in combo).  I'm excited and also super nervous.

Do people use this wall as a place to keep in touch?  Or are people using Facebook?

What have you been up to?  Remind me again where you are in the bay area?  I live in Sunnyvale and work in Palo Alto.

Kim

Marie Hughes's picture

Congrats! I was looking at the triathlon but I'm out of work so I'm trying not to spend a lot of money.

There are a lot of free training plans out there. Start with BeginnerTriathlete.com. They have some and you can ask people for others using their forums.

I don't do well with the canned plans. I do better having key workouts and then modifying as needed base on how much free time I have. When I was training for Sprint tris, I did things like:

1 spin class a week

1 longer bike ride that got longer every week

Run 3x a week using Couch-to-5K to start

Swim 1-2 times a week, at least 1 OWS a month

1 strength workout a week

Attend workshops on tire changing, transition strategies, swim technique, bike handling skills as they become available.

And every workout had a purpose. Some were to get faster, some to practice nutriton strategies, some to increase endurance.

kim serra's picture

hey Tribe!

anyone up for planning a ride sometime in the next couple months?  I'm LOVING being on my bike these days!  The Stevens Creek trail isn't far from me, it's about a 15 mile ride (I think, I'm guessing) from my place through Shoreline Park to San Antonio Rd and back again.  It's not long, but it's a nice ride.  There can be a lot of families there during the best part of the day though, making it hard to manuever around them.  Earlier is better ;)

Or we could ride along Foothill to Page Mill, then up Page Mill and around to Sand Hill, there's a decent hill in there (well, I think it's decent).

Or, I'm happy to ride somewhere new :)

I'm actually having to work for the next 3 weekends, but in May I'll have more weekend time.  What's everyone's availability?

Kim

Marie Hughes's picture

I'd love to have someone to ride with. My Saturday mornings are full though because I'm helping out with my club's New to the Sport program. So mostly I bike on Sundays on the weeks that we don't bike on Sat.

April 24 and May 8, I will go swim with the club and then will bike afterwards. Everyone else will probably run after instead but I will have run the day before so I won't.

This weekend I'm doing a training weekend at Lake San Antonio. Next weekend I'm doing a Century Ride. April 30-May 1, I'm doing Wildflower.

Hello SF Tribe!

I wanted to send a quick note to tell everyone there is a virtual 5K taking place on March 12 to support the victims of the Christchurch earthquake.

All you have to do is go to the link below, make a small donation ($5 NZD minimum), and run/walk a 5K anywhere you want on March 12.  All donations support the New Zealand Red Cross.

My club is putting on their annual kids triathlon that weekend so how available I am will depend on what I end up volunteering for there. But I should be able to do something on Sat. for a few hours.

Hi Marison!

I would LOVE to be there!  Not sure I qualify as a "booth babe", but I'm willing to volunteer my services for whatever is needed.  I'll email you.

Okay, I've picked a date for our first meet-up! Between this wall and emails, it seems like we are evenly split between East Bay and Silicon Valley, so I went for some place central to most but not too far away from the farthest out. Plus, it's got some good biking and hiking trails all around the area.

Date: Jan. 23rd

Time: 9:30 am

Place: Niles Staging Area, 709 Old Canyon Rd., Fremont, CA

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Alameda+Creek+Recreat...

(The Google Maps link will show you what the entrance looks like.)

What: Bike ride on Alameda Creek Trail (or do a run or walk if you prefer)

Out and back ride of 1.5 hours total (everyone go at their own pace, out 45 min, then turn around and come back)

followed by:

Getting to  know you/ Planning our next meet-ups/events at

Mission Coffee

151 Washington Blvd.
Fremont, CA 94539
510-623-6920

http://www.fremontcoffee.com/

(We should be getting here around 11:30 am if you want to skip the bike ride)

Suggested equipment: Enough water and nutrition for a 1.5 hour workout, cyclecomputer with cadence, spare tubes, pump/CO2 cartridge, tools, sunblock lotion, and additional clothing for any weather changes.

Thanks for organizing, Marie!

I really appreciate you setting up this meeting, but I can't make it this weekend due to a work gathering I unfortunately can't skip.  I wish you a wonderful ride, and I hope to join you next time.

- Danielle

kim serra's picture

is everyone going?  I don't have a mountain bike (just a road bike), and I'm not sure yet if I can make it, but I'm definitely considering it with my other stuff I've got going on.  If I can't make this one, I want to make the next one for sure.

Wow, we have 11 members! I think it's time to start organizing some meet-ups.

I know that Dec. is busy because of the holidays. How about something in Jan? When is best for people - evenings or weekends?

Hello SF Tribe!

Thanks for organizing, Marie!

I live and work in the East Bay, but am happy to meet anywhere on a weekend.  Evenings are tough for me since I teach late a few nights a week, but I'm much more flexible on weekends. I am happy to get together for a run or ride or even just a coffee to meet everyone.

I look forward to meeting all of you and getting ready for the next tri season!

Happy Holidays!

Danielle

Hello!

I'm in to meet over a weekend in any central location. Happy to meet some local GOTRibal women! Just let me know when and where. Thanks for trying to organize.

Linda

Brandi Benavidez's picture

1) When should we meet?

Weekends are best for me too.  Work varies day to day so it's tough to schedule.

2) Where should we meet?

Silicon Valley proper is best for me.  I work and live in North San Jose (near 237/101 interchange) so I can easily get to Sunnyvale, Mt. View or even Palo Alto.  I also find there are less cars and more space to cycle with minimal traffic or actual bike lanes.

Look forward to meeting you all!  I've already signed up for Wildflower Long Course in the Spring so I have a lot of training to do!

Brandi

kim serra's picture

Hi Marie!

I saw your message about January meetups!  I can't decide what's the best way to respond, if I reply to the email it is addressed to "info@gotribal" and I'm not sure if it'll get directed to you.  And I can't find the message on the web site to reply, so I'll reply here and hope that's an okay thing to do ;)

1) When should we meet?

Weekends work best for me, so Saturday any time or Sunday afternoons.  I can also do a weeknight if that's the general consensus, I get off work between 4:30-5pm.

2) Where should we meet?

I live in Sunnyvale and work in Palo Alto.  I can meet in the South Bay, Silicon Valley proper, or perhaps the Peninsula.

I'm not in good triathlon shape these days, I had to take a bunch of time off due to some surgery, and haven't started running again yet, though I'm considering giving it a try one day this week.  I'm good on my bike, but need to build my mileage back up again (my longest ride was at the beginning of summer and it was 35 miles).  I can generally ride 12 flat easily, maybe even more. I haven't done many hills, especially not since June.  And swimming, its been a number of months.  I have a serious fear of ocean swimming and I can't do it.  I swim in pools for sure, and I'm working on my willingness to swim in a lake.

I've only done one tri so far, it was last year and it was a mini.  I'm really looking for workout buddies and to lose weight and improve my fitness and I loved the feeling of accomplishment from the mini tri, so I'd like to try a sprint next year.

Marie Hughes's picture

It's fine to reply here. But if people don't want to reply pubically, they should look in their "Messages" (link should be on the left) and there should be a PM you can reply to.

Linda Lee's picture

Hello!

I am new to the area! I am still not comfortable cycling around cars and traffic--any good places to cycle in the SJ area (like a Mission Bay in SD, if you are familiar with that area)?

Also, any great Olympic distance triathlons which are worthwhile in the area?

Thank you!

Linda

For my fellow foodie-triathletes:
The S.F. Underground Market is this Saturday at SOMArts! It's all kinds of local, homemade and handmade treats to sample or buy, healthy and not-healthy. Admission is $2-5.
Have fun!

Hi Everyone!

I'm a newbie triathlete, just did my first one a couple of months ago. It was the Emeryville Shortest Tri Ever, which was an awesome fun event and perfect for getting my tri feet wet!

I'm interested in finding some people to hang out with, train with, have too much coffee with... so I'll be looking forward to any meetups that get scheduled :)

I'm from the south bay area, Sunnyvale really, but I'm willing to drive or take Caltrain to meet up with folks. Or, if there's some of you around here, we could meet up at a coffee place on Murphy and just say hi and chat a bit.

Have a happy day!

Marie Hughes's picture

Hi Kim-

Welcome to the tribe. When we last talked about meeting up, most people were in the East Bay, I'm not sure that's still true any more. I work in Mountain View so I am flexible as to where we can get together.

I'd love to get us all training for something, if that works out.

Marie Hughes's picture

Okay, with the new site, it should be a lot easier to get some meet-ups going.

I've got July 10th open. Let's try to plan a meeting for that day and see what happens.

Tanya Maslach's picture

Hi Marie!
Just popping in to say I just am getting ready to leave Silicon Valley and have met many women up in San Jose/Saratoga who have asked me about local TRIbes in the area for meeting other women for training....
Not sure how active you ladies are, but they would love to get together.... any plans for a coffee, training ride, or dinner in the near future?
I've referred them to your TRIbe as they seem to be located closest to you...
Thanks ladies!
Onward and upward indeed,
Tanya

I just made it over to the new site! Hooray!!!

Thank you, Marie, for starting the discussion on a meet-up!

I am interested in getting together, but unfortunately I am participating in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer July 10-11th in San Francisco, so I won't be able to make it. If anyone is interested in going for a fun walk for a good cause - come join me! If you end up in San Francisco on a ride/run/outing that weekend, definitely check out the walk or come to the opening / closing ceremonies at Fort Mason! It's an inspiring event! (more Avon Walk info at http://www.avonwalk.org/san-francisco/)

Hopefully I can catch up with the group sometime soon!

Tanya Maslach's picture

Oh my gosh! It's Tanya here, and I just was in SF/Silicon Valley -- I passed right by the Avon walk on July 11!
Hope you had a wonderful time and enjoyed some great weather during the walk....
Onward!

Chief TRIbal Officer

Hello All! I live in Marin, and am on the LLS Team In Training for the 2010 Louisville Ironman. I haven't worked out since 2006 - and I'm 48 years old. "Back in the day" I was a fairly good triathlete - of course, the "day" was in the '80s. Having fun training again - did my first race on Sunday (Olympic tri in Pleasant Hill). Glad to join the Tribe! Shep

Hello SF Tribe - nice to meet you all! My name is Danielle, I'm in my 30s, and live over in the East Bay. I'm still fairly new to triathlon, having only done a handful of races (sprint to HIM), but I hope to do more in the future! I look forward to learning from all of you and training/racing together too! I have not signed up for any 2010 tris yet, but I do have a few run and cycling events on my spring schedule (the Relay, Cinderella Classic, Xterra Redwood Peak Trail Run). I'll let you know as soon as I sign up for some tris!

Jen G's picture

Hi ladies... I'm in my 30s and I've been a runner for several years, but wanted to branch out into something else after I realized I have a pretty good talent for swimming. :) I did my first sprint tri in October '08 and look forward to my first Oly and HIM in 2010!

Brandi Benavidez's picture

Happy New Year ladies! Like Jen I'm in my 30s. I lived in the Bay Area until a year and a half ago when I moved to Miami and my obsession with triathlon began. With the sunny weather and warm water I was finally able to jump in! Now triathlon is my life. I am a USAT race director and this year I will also become a USAT L1 coach. My race goals for the year are 2 Olys and 1 HIM. And then, if things go well, I will move back to the beautiful Bay Area in the fall and bring more races and multisport events to the place I call home.

Marie Hughes's picture

I'll go first... I'm in my 50s and decided last year around this time to do a triathlon. I think I must have always wanted to do it ever since I saw Kona on cable in the 80s. But the run held me back. I tried running a few times and couldn't do it. So when I started the Couch-to-5K program and actually was successful with it, I started thinking about triathlon. I started with a Sprint, followed by an Olympic 3 weeks later and the rest is history. I'll be doing two HIMs and an IM this year and I'm so excited!

Hi Kim-

Welcome to the tribe. When we last talked about meeting up, most people were in the East Bay, I'm not sure that's still true any more. I work in Mountain View so I am flexible as to where we can get together.

I'd love to get us all training for something, if that works out.

Okay, with the new site, it should be a lot easier to get some meet-ups going.

I've got July 10th open. Let's try to plan a meeting for that day and see what happens.

Oh my gosh! It's Tanya here, and I just was in SF/Silicon Valley -- I passed right by the Avon walk on July 11!
Hope you had a wonderful time and enjoyed some great weather during the walk....
Onward!

Hi ladies... I'm in my 30s and I've been a runner for several years, but wanted to branch out into something else after I realized I have a pretty good talent for swimming. :) I did my first sprint tri in October '08 and look forward to my first Oly and HIM in 2010!
