Disney Marathon

Is anyone doing the 2012 Disney marathon in Orlando, FL?

Above: my husband and I at the completion of the 2011 St. Anthony's Olympic distance triathlon. Yes, that is an ice cold beer in my hand!

DISNEY MARATHON

After 6 years of participating in endurance events with the Palm Beach Team in Training chapter, we have finally decided to participate in our very first marathon. Rob will be doing the Disney Marathon and I will be doing the Goofy Challenge the weekend of January 7 and 8, 2012. The Goofy Challenge is for anyone crazy enough to want to run both the Disney 1/2 marathon and Disney marathon on the same weekend. I will be running 13.1 miles on Saturday, January 7, and 26.2 miles on Sunday, January 8. That's a total of 39.3 miles I will be running at Disney, while helping to raise money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

TRIPLE CROWN RECIPIANT

The Disney Marathon will be our triple crown. A triple crown participant is anyone that has completed at least one century bike ride, one triathlon and one marathon through the Team in Training program. Since 2006, I have participated in 5 century bike rides and 2 triathlons through the Team in Training program. My husband Rob, who is a TNT cycle coach, and I have raised over $30,000 for the society during this time.

LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is a non-profit charity that conducts research towards cures, and helps ease the burden of those battling blood cancers such as leukemia, Hodgkin’s disease, lymphoma and myeloma.

Please consider making a donation to support our participation in Team in Training, and help advance the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission. You may make a donation by visiting my fundraising website which is located at: http://pages.teamintraining.org/pb/wdw12/lsmythe Or you may send us a check, made out to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, to our home address listed below.

CANCER EFFECTS EVERYONE

Rob has been going through his own battle to fight cancer for the past two years. In October of 2010, he went to his urologist for a routine check up, and was hoping to be diagnosed as one year cancer free. Unfortunately the cancer was back and he had to undergo a second surgery on December 15, 2010.

Rob began what we thought was going to be a year's worth of immunotherapy and interferon treatments starting the end of January 20111. Around the beginning of April he was given the all clear! His cancer is currently in remission and instead of having to continue with a year's worth of treatments, he is now looking at a few maintenance treatments for the remainder of the year. We both enjoy being part of the Team in Training program and staying active, even while we are going through our own personal crisis, is the key to keeping a positive outlook on life. GO TEAM!

Hi Lynn-

I'm doing the Goofy Challenge too!

A bunch of my friends I know from another forum are all going to Florida to do it. Well, one of us is "just" doing the Marathon.

We all had weight loss surgery and lost at least 100 pounds (some as much as 250) and meeting up to do this race is our way of celebrating our success and new lifestyle and also (hopefully) inspiring others.

Do you want to try to meet up while we're there? We're getting into Orlando on Thurs. before the race and staying until Thurs. after.

P.S. Good luck to Rob fighting cancer!

Hi Marie,

That's so awesome that everyone in your group has lost since incredible amounts of weight. Congratulations to all of you! I have slowly lost 35 pounds over the past 4 years through exercise and change in diet. I am starting to get pretty serious about my racing and want to drop another 15-20 before attempting my first Ironman distance triathlon.

My husband and I are driving up from south Florida, about a 2 1/2 hour drive, on Friday late morning or early afternoon. We will be leaving first thing Monday morning to drive back home. We will be staying with the Palm Beach chapter of Team in Training at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort. We have a pretty full schedule of events with the team - packet pickup at expo, team meetings, pasta party before 1/2, victory party after 1/2, etc...

Maybe we'll see each other at packet pick up or race day mornings?

Take care and continued success with your weight loss journey and training for the Goofy Challenge. :)

I figured TnT would have lots of socializing. My group is going to meet for dinner Friday night and again in the tents before the race.  The experienced ones tell me you have to get there very early and then there is nothing to do so meeting in the tents on race morning is a way to pass some time.

When it gets closer to the event, we can exchange contact info!

I think we have to take the shuttle bus from our hotel to race start at around 3 something in the morning. Heard it is long wait, then they put you in starting corals then you have to wait some more - UGH! Some of my friends just did the Wine & Dine 1/2 marathon at Disney and said it is pretty similar to what we will be doing in January. Sounds like we'll have lots of time to met people before the run starts. :)
