When It Rains It Pours

So I am sitting here at home enjoying a day off. It is the Labor Day holiday here and my office is closed for the day, school is closed for the day and The Husband has a scheduled day off. So here we all sit hanging out together. Today could’ve been the perfect day to get out and be doing something … anything. But the North Dakota weather seems to think it might be better spent around the house, as it is 52° F and raining. And probably the perfect end to a crazy weekend.

I know the phrase “when it rains, it pours” usually refers to bad things, but in this case not bad – just crazy and hectic. I started out my weekend with a 12 mile run planned, which I was excitedly nervous for. That would be my longest run in about 3 years. With a sprint tri coming up next weekend and a half marathon the weekend after that, I needed to do this long run just so I KNEW I could go that distance. Plus I needed to get it done now to allow time to recover before my tri in a week. So I successfully completed the run with the help of a good friend who managed her longest run ever that day too – She ran the first 6 miles with me. Not bad for a girl who couldn’t run a mile not all that long ago. Now she has dreams of a marathon, and I have all the confidence in the world that she will make that dream come true. Hopefully I will be with her every step of the way!

So back to the rain – so before I could really celebrate my accomplishment of 12 miles, the rain came. My son tripped and fell and broke his arm. So 2 Emergency Rooms and one surgery later – we find ourselves spending the night in the hospital. My day, post-run, involves no time to eat and getting very minimal sleep in a recliner. Not exactly how I had imagined celebrating my long run. I had planned to celebrate with 1 oz. of Miller Lite for every mile ran. Well that celebration did come, just a day later – after we were all home and feeling a little more rested.

So today I am going to enjoy my rainy day at home with my family and try as best I can to prepare for the hectic week ahead of us: between school (with new challenges for my son), work, an 8 year old birthday party (poor kid broke his arm only 3 days before his birthday) and an upcoming race. And put the recovery focus on my son – who is going to have a long 6 weeks ahead of him. Hope everyone who had a holiday weekend, had one a little less hectic than mine!
